The project “Ballad Portal” intends to take up cultural impulses coming from narratives in verse. Ballads tell stories about people who are foreigners in their own home countries, distanced from their environments or on the run – even if their fleeing ends up in the escape to their own inner self or in defeat. From the ballads of the 19th to the songs of protest of the 20th century the individual’s ‘own’ and individuality are perceived with new eyes. The individuals in ballads have the advantage of being de-territorialised and not having to serve anyone. In ballads, being free means to be free from national and social constraints. The ballad alleges that what is being narrated was experienced by the narrator him or herself. In ballads, transgressing limits is both a privilege and a necessity at the same time. In a globalised world the ballad, being a European art form, can build bridges between the cultural systems in European countries. Our learning partnership intends to tackle the common musical and poetical bases in order to define the musical elements and the exchange via ballads in terms of places of encounter. On the homepage “Ballad Portal” the project results – expressions of cooperative practical work and European concepts of life – will be made accessible. The object of the project will be to reflect upon and acquire knowledge of issues relevant to the topic. At the same time, however, the project will focus on instruction and the communication of the cultural medium Ballad, Chanson, Song, Canzone, Lied in a workshop-oriented structure.
